In the Qatar Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri, a McLaren driver, outperformed Lando Norris, his title rival and teammate.
With two races left in the championship, the Australian, who trails Norris by 24 points, won by 0.058 seconds in the final session before sprint qualifying, which begins at 17:30 GMT.
On a faster lap, Norris ran wide out of the final corner, which will win him the championship on Sunday if he defeats Max Verstappen and Piastri by two points over the weekend.
Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, who frequently excels early in sprint weekends before the natural order coalesces later, was in third place, 0.3686secs off the pace.
Carlos Sainz of Williams finished fourth, ahead of Isack Hadjar of Racing Bulls.
Verstappen, Alex Albon, Charles Leclerc, Lance Stroll, Aston Martin, and Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes made up the top 10.
Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari ranked 12th overall as Leclerc and Hamilton both appeared uneasy throughout the demanding Lusail circuit session.
Leclerc’s power steering system was reporting a lack of feel.
