Perrie Edwards has revealed how her current fiancé Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reacted when an old flame got back in touch with her.

The former Little Mix singer sits down with Paul C Brunson for an emotional chat on his podcast, sharing details of two painful miscarriages and her ‘toxic’ engagement to Zayn Malik amongst other topics.

Perrie and Zayn began dating soon after Little Mix triumphed on The X Factor in 2011, with their whirlwind romance accelerating rapidly. Zayn proposed in 2013 and even had Perrie’s image inked on his arm to show his love for the pop princess.

However, their fairy-tale didn’t endure and the pair confirmed their engagement was over in July 2015. Perrie later disclosed that Zayn, who swiftly began dating Gigi Hadid following their break-up, actually ended things via text message.

Perrie went on to find love with former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017, welcoming their first baby Axl into the world in 2021 and becoming engaged the following year.

On today’s instalment of We Need To Talk, Paul C Brunson’s podcast, Perrie recalls her unhealthy relationship with Zayn and how their ‘toxic’ romance compares to the bond she has with Alex these days.

She tells Celebs Go Dating star how her time with ‘first love’ Zayn shaped her future, admitting it was “probably not good” and that the pain of the heartbreak left her thinking “I’m done with men forever. That’s me done.”

But she managed to find peace in her next relationship and credits Alex with being a positive and healthy partner. Although she doesn’t mention Zayn by name, Perrie tells Paul about an instance when an ex got back in touch and how Alex handled it.

“And I remember there was one point my ex reached out and I didn’t know how to handle the situation because I’d been with Alex for like a year and a half, two years, and I felt a bit uncomfortable about it,” Perrie recalls.

“And I remember sweating and like panicking, thinking, I’ve got to tell him that, obviously, I’ve spoke to him. And I remember being terrified, thinking, oh, no. And then I sat down and I was like, I need to tell you something. He was like, ‘okay, is everything all right?’ I was like, ‘yes, such and such reached out today’.”

She continues: “It was really weird. And he was like, same what? So I told him everything. And then he was like, okay, well, I really appreciate you telling me, like, thank you for letting me know. That’s fine. Like, hopefully, he doesn’t contact you again. I was thinking, okay, cool. That’s it. And that’s that. That was it.”

Elsewhere during the chat, Perrie, who has three year old son Axel with the footballer, calls the former One Direction heartthrob her “first love” but confesses their time together was anything but healthy.

Paul later asks how her relationship with Zayn, and its bitter ending, shaped how she loved again after their split. “Probably not good. It wasn’t it wasn’t ideal. I think it definitely at the time, I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal,” Perrie muses.

“Because it was my first relationship, first love. I was like, oh, this is how it’s supposed to feel. It’s supposed to feel a little bit toxic in some ways. This is probably normal.

“And then when I become single, I was almost thinking like I never, ever want to go through that again. I didn’t even want to meet anybody. I was like, that’s me done. I don’t think I could bear that pain. Like the pain of heartbreak is so grim that I remember thinking I’m done with men forever. That’s me done.

“And then when I met Alex, I had so many issues in our relationship at the beginning that I probably didn’t notice at the time. But now reflecting back, I’m thinking, oh, that probably wasn’t, it wasn’t good. And I’ve noticed it a lot.”
