Just months before Paul Danan’s tragic death, he was hospitalised with a vape addiction.

The Hollyoaks actor sadly died earlier this year at the age of 46, with his management team confirming his passing in an emotional statement in January. Paul, who rose to fame playing Sol Patrick on the Channel 4, was described as a “beacon of light to so many” and his “untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him”.

It was later reported that he died after he ‘ slipped and fell ‘ in a luxury apartment near Bristol. He battled many addictions throughout his career and had visited rehab 17 times. The British TV star, whose death inquest is taking place today, was open about his health scares and publicly discussed two terrifying near-death experiences – one of which occurred months before his death when he suffered respiratory failure due to his ‘ obsessive ‘ vaping habit.

Paul revealed he was rushed to hospital when he collapsed and was admitted to intensive care. “I was dead – it’s a miracle I’m here. I’m upstairs puffing away on my vape then suddenly I lost my breath and collapsed”, he said. “My family called for an ambulance and started giving me CPR, then police arrived and took over before paramedics took me to hospital”.

He revealed his family were given the worst news as he explained: “I was on a machine in ICU and ended up with pneumonia. My family were warned that I might not make it through the night”. In a stark warning to fans, he added: “I’m so lucky”. Paul recalled how he had been vaping, and that had been the reason for his health scare.

He said the doctor was “harsh” with him and warned him how serious it was, explaining that if he ever smoked again, he could be on an oxygen tank. Paul quit smoking in 2021 but turned to vaping as he believed “it was the safest way to smoke”. He admitted: “I saw a YouTube video where someone blew cigarette smoke into cotton wool then did the same with a vape. The cotton wool turned black from the smoke from the cigarette, but the wool remained the same colour after the vape vapour hit it… Off the back of that, in my head – because I have ADHD everything is very visual – I’ve always thought they’d be OK”.

However, vaping soon became an addiction. He said: “Everywhere I went I’d have my vape with me. I’d always have one in my hand, I would even go to sleep with it, like a comfort thing”. Paul was open about his battles with addiction and drugs and was even handed cocaine on his first day on the set of Hollyoaks. He said: “The day I started there, someone and I am not going to say who, handed me an eighth of cocaine and I didn’t really know much about coke and he was like, ‘ welcome. ‘ It was the first day, the first read through, I hadn’t even filmed anything”.

Official advice from the NHS states that nicotine vaping is “substantially less harmful than smoking” and is an “effective tool” for quitting cigarettes. However, it is not “completely harmless, and NHS doctors only recommend it for adult smokers to” support quitting smoking and staying quit”.
