After a Palestinian opened fire at a security checkpoint before shooting him dead, two Israeli soldiers were killed in the northern occupied West Bank.
The Israeli army confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the attack occurred close to Jenin in the northern West Bank’s Tayasir checkpoint.
A soldier was shot at close range by the attacker, according to the Israeli Ynet outlet, and the incident lasted for several minutes before the Israeli Ynet outlet reported.
Eight soldiers were also hurt in the attack, according to the Israeli ambulance service.
Major Israeli operations are currently being conducted in the Jenin governorate, including the refugee camp in the city, Tulkarem, and other locations, as a result of the incident, which took place in the West Bank during a time of increased tension.
Shortly after the ceasefire was reached in Gaza, the Israeli military launched a significant offensive known as the “Iron Wall” in the area.
Additionally, Israel has expanded its security measures and expanded existing ones throughout the West Bank. At least 900 such checkpoints, gates and dirt mounds have cut off Palestinian communities and rendered movement next to impossible between villages, towns and cities.
In Jenin, nine in Tulkarem, and three in Tubas, where two sites were shelled on Tuesday morning, have the deadly Israeli raids continued for 15 days. This year, Israeli forces killed at least 70 Palestinians and injured dozens more, and taken dozens of others. Since the Israeli army’s most recent operation, 44 people have been killed.
According to the Israeli army, 10 children, one woman, and two elderly Palestinians were among those killed, according to the health ministry.
After a new Israeli military operation levelled several buildings, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reported that the Jenin refugee camp is heading in a “catastrophic direction.”
According to Juliette Touma, a UNRWA spokeswoman, the camp’s “complete destruction in a series of detonations by the Israeli forces” had been reported to Geneva reporters.
Israel’s attacks in the Tulkarem refugee camp have displaced three-quarters of Palestinians from the area, Faisal Salama, head of the Popular Committee for Services in the camp, said.
Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, on Monday condemned the Israeli attacks.
“Extreme violence has risen since the ceasefire was in place in Gaza, particularly in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas,” according to the statement. This is unacceptable”, the organisation said in a post on X.
