Since Reece James’ reelection, Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly has received his first call up to the England squad.

Chelsea beat Liverpool 1-0 on Saturday in the Premier League game with right-back James out of injury.

He was told to stay away from “following medical assessments” after posting a picture of a gash on his shin following the game.

O’Reilly replaces England’s Under-21s for the games against Latvia on Tuesday, October 9 and Wales on Thursday, October 9.

Djed Spence is the only recognized right-back in England manager Thomas Tuchel’s squad, with the 20-year-old primarily playing left-back for City.

O’Reilly, who has played for City since he was eight years old, made 21 appearances last year and scored five goals as he made his first appearance for the club in Manchester.

Analysis – Call-up reward for City performance

O’Reilly’s call-up is in recognition of his City performance.

Pep Guardiola has switched the left-back from a number 10 and started seven of City’s games this season.

Tuchel has compared O’Reilly’s strong running ability to the physicality of the Premier League and other players.

If O’Reilly makes the World Cup’s final squad, Tuchel will benefit from his physical prowess and ability to play at various positions.

O’Reilly has represented England from under-15 to under-20, and he was initially called up for the under-21 team in September but had to withdraw due to injury.

The 20-year-old still considers himself a midfielder, but Reece James’ call to play him leaves him with the impression that he will be used in his new position.
