One Dead, Hundreds Rescued After Heavy Snowfall In China

After unexpected heavy snowfall hit China’s northwest and western mountain regions over the weekend, one hiker died and hundreds of others were saved, according to state media reports.

State broadcaster CCTV reported late on Sunday that more than 200 hikers who had been stranded by the weather near the eastern face of Mount Everest were expected to make their way to safety gradually.

In recent days, outdoor enthusiasts have flocked to the nation’s famous beauty spots, taking advantage of an eight-day national holiday, but many have fallen victim to unexpected extreme weather.

According to a report released on Monday by CCTV, a hiker in northwest Qinghai’s Tiger Valley died from hypothermia and altitude sickness.

After hundreds of rescuers and two drones were deployed, it added, more than 130 others were recovered from the same area.

Without specifying how many hikers were there, the report claimed that searches were ongoing to find more in the area.

350 walkers trapped in a valley leading to the eastern slope of Mount Everest were safely located in the town of Qudang, according to CCTV’s report from Sunday night.

More than 200 hikers are still climbing the slopes of Karma Valley, which has an elevation of over 4, 000 meters (13, 000 feet), according to CCTV, and have made contact with them.

Local authorities, according to the broadcaster, said the walkers were supposed to progress slowly to Qudang.

On Monday, the situation didn’t get updated, and AFP was unable to contact the area’s local authorities.

A hiker who was saved shared photos of tents that were almost completely submerged in snow on social media from Saturday through Sunday.

He claimed he had arrived in Qudang on Sunday after being contacted by AFP.

More than 70 people have died as a result of landslides and floods caused by heavy downpours over the border of Nepal and India, according to officials as rescue workers struggled to reach remote mountainous communities on Monday.
