Oko Jumbo-Led Rivers Assembly Begins Oversight Visits To LGs
The Victor Oko Jumbo-led faction has begun oversight functions to ensure accountability and transparency in local government administration in the wake of the ongoing political conflict in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The lawmakers visited a number of Local Government Areas (LGAs) to examine how council funding is used, starting with Eleme LGA.
The House Committee on Local Government Affairs, led by Deputy Speaker Adolphus Timothy, claimed that the exercise was not a witch-hunt but a means to improve efficiency at the local government level during the visit.
Addressing the legislators, Eleme LGA Chairman, Brain Gokpa, recounted the challenges faced by the council, including the destruction of the Secretariat during post-election violence. He, however, assured that work was being done to create a new Secretariat in addition to other development initiatives.
Goodboy Sokari, the leader of the assembly, praised the chairman for his efforts while condemning the vandalism of some local government facilities last year after inspecting the project site.
