On Friday, Pep Guardiola was questioned by BBC Sport about his concern over his Manchester City team’s late goals.

He responded, “I have many concerns.” “Not this one,” though.

Guardiola may be revising that statement right now.

On Wednesday night in the Champions League, City was pegged back to 2-2 draw in Monaco before the second equalizer came through England defender Eric Dier’s cool penalty.

Erling Haaland, a master goaltender, continued his incredible scoring streak by scoring both of City’s goals, but his evaluation of the performance was harsh.

The Norwegian told TNT Sport, “Of course, I don’t feel good that we didn’t win.” We play poorly in the second half, and we don’t believe our performance is sufficient. We don’t merit victory, either.

We require more energy, they say. We need to dominate them more than we did in the first half. They significantly increased their lead in the second half, but I don’t believe it is adequate.

Worrying behavior is emerging

City were on the verge of clinching a second consecutive Champions League title, but Dier’s last-minute penalty saved a draw for Monaco.

Although Guardiola’s side have won six of their last six games, a worrying trend is beginning to show itself in late goal conceding.

In each competition so far, they have conceded eight times, but half of those times have occurred during crucial times in each half.

  • 23 August: After conceding in the third minute of injury-time in the first half, Tottenham were held to a 2-0 home loss.
  • 31 August: Brighton loss to 2-1 after conceding in the 89th minute.
  • 21 September: Arsenal 1-1 draw after conceding in the 93rd minute.
  • 1 October: After conceding in the 90th minute, Monaco 2-2.

It would have put City on par with second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League, three points after conceding in the 89th minute or later, and two more in the Champions League.

This was also a missed opportunity to repair their recent, mediocre away performance in Europe, which they have now failed to win their last five road matches.

The outcome is a continuation of last year’s disappointment, which included being eliminated from the Champions League at the play-off round and finishing third in the Premier League.

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt said on Match of the Day, “You wouldn’t panic. Everyone wants to win their games and receive the acclaim of their teamwork, but it’s not customary to continue doing it year after year.

Man City have been doing it for a long time, but recently they have struggled a little. They have players who can win you significant prizes and competitions.

Should have been a penalty for “Stupid” defending?

When Dier stooped to the goal with a free kick, City’s Nico Gonzalez instead slammed him in the head.

After being forced to wait over five minutes to kick the ball because the referee had been reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor and because the two sets of staff had a disagreement, the former Tottenham man did incredibly well to score from the spot.

Guardiola said Gonzalez “touches the ball first” and that he had no intention of fouling Dier, while Haaland said he had not seen the incident again and that “but kicking someone in the face is a penalty” is what it is.

Butt continued, “It is a little lazy from the defenders. The defense let him bully the defenders by making a powerful, aggressive run from deep.

In the middle of a big game with such a big game, there was only a few people talking, but it was a really stupid thing to do in the box. There was no denying that a penalty would be levied. In European football, you only need to watch the picture for a second before you can see it.

Nedum Onuoha, a former City defender, described the penalty scoring in a World Cup as “gratuitous.”
