Cameron Norrie, the British player who defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final 16 of the Paris Masters, hailed his upset as “the biggest win of my career.”
In the second round of the ATP Masters 1, 000 event in the French capital, Norrie won 4-6 6-3 6-4 against the Spaniard in straight sets in the quarter-finals of this year’s Wimbledon.
Due to a forearm injury, Norrie, who previously missed the US Open and the Olympic Games in Paris last year, praised her victory.
“It was my first qualifying round last year. I’ve been trying to enjoy my tennis since recovering from my injury, and I did so.
I’m pleased with the way I did it, having defeated the most confident player in the world at the moment, and the biggest win of my career.
Alcaraz won the first set, but Norrie did a powerful job in the second, breaking early and maintaining his momentum to decide the match.
Alcaraz broke Alcaraz in the final set with an incredible backhand pass before the world number 31 saved two break points in the process.
Norrie, who defeated Sebastian Baez in straight sets in Monday’s first round, said, “I actually went for a walk this morning with my coach and we talked about what I needed to tell myself.”
“I did a fantastic job serving for the game against Baez yesterday.
I declared to myself, “I want to be here at this moment, and I felt very relaxed.”
It was a pleasant and significant walk.
The winner of the second-round match between Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech, a cousin of Valentin Vacherot, and the Briton will next face the winner.
Alcaraz, who returned from an ankle injury to play his first match on the tour since beating Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open final at the end of September, registered 54 unforced errors on Tuesday.
If Jannik Sinner, who will face Zizou Bergs from Belgium in the second round, emerges victorious, he now runs the risk of losing his top spot.
After the defeat, Alcaraz said, “I’m really disappointed about my level.
I had all the ideas and goals in place, but even in the first set, which I won, I felt much more accomplished than what I actually did.
