The fire outbreak that started on a dry crude storage barge at Cawthorne Channel 1 in Rivers State, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), was successfully contained.
Olufemi Soneye, the flow station’s chief corporate communications officer, said the incident had no impact on the flow station’s operations in the area in a statement released on Thursday.
The fire was successfully contained thanks to the quick action of our emergency teams and industry partners. The incident did not impact flow station operations”, he said.
According to Soneye, no lives were lost in the incident.

NNPCL spokesman also assured the public of its commitment to safety, environmental protection, and operational integrity.
” Most importantly, there were no casualties, and all personnel are safe. Soneye stated that NNPC Ltd. places a high priority on safety and maintains a strong commitment to environmental protection and operational integrity.
The fire, which broke out at around 2: 10 p. m. on Wednesday, began on the BESTAF5 barge and spread to other barges in the area.
Near the border between Bonny and Degema Local Government Areas in Rivers State, the Cawthorne Channel is a major hub for oil and gas companies.
However, quick response from emergency teams and industry partners prevented further harm.
The fire’s cause is expected to be investigated by authorities.

Cawthorne Channel 1 Barges successfully contained a fire outbreak
At approximately 14: 10 hours on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, a fire broke out on the dry crude storage barge BESTAF5 at Cawthorne Channel 1,  , Rivers State, spreading to other barges.
The fire was successfully contained thanks to the quick action of our partner businesses and emergency teams. The flow station’s operations were unaffected by the incident.
Most importantly, there were no casualties, and all personnel are safe.
