Five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State have been constructed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners, each with a mmscf/d capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas.
The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place on Thursday, marked the commencement of construction works on the five Mini-LNG plants, namely: NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete.
According to Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd, the projects play a critical role in increasing access to energy for millions of Nigerians, providing job opportunities, promoting economic growth, and contributing to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“These mini LNG facilities will ensure the efficient transportation of gas over long distances, providing a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, mobility, industries, and businesses”, Kyari said.
The Gas Resources Minister of State, Rt. Hon. The development was characterized by Ekperikpe Ekpo as a remarkable achievement in the oil and gas industry of Nigeria.
Ekpo assured NNPC Ltd and its partners of the Federal Government’s support, stressing that the initiatives align with the government’s aspirations of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for national economic development.
Mr. Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, in a statement noted that the company’s renewed focus on gas and power projects is informed by its commitment to support the Federal Government’s drive towards improving Nigeria’s power generation, engendering industrialization, and fostering economic growth and development.
Soneye said, “We are deliberately tapping into that agenda, and the extent of our gas pipeline infrastructure’s spread across the nation shows this.”
The five mini-LNG plants are expected to unlock ample opportunities in investment, including direct and indirect employment for the state’s teeming population.
