Politicians in Rivers State are being urged to refrain from involving the judiciary in their political disputes by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The chairmen of the eight NBA branches in Rivers State made the point during a joint press briefing that the judiciary must continue to function as a free and impartial branch of the government.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) is the only body under the law that has the authority to handle disciplinary matters involving judges.
They warned that any attempt to circumvent the NJC and involve security agencies in judicial officer investigations would set a dangerous precedent and stifle the rule of law.

The chairmen urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to reconsider its resolution, which directed the Department of State Security (DSS) to investigate the Chief Judge and gave them a chance to let the NJC handle the situation in accordance with established legal procedures.
The chairmen also made an appeal to all parties involved in the political crisis in Rivers to give the state’s and its citizens’ best interests precedence. They urged the people of Nigeria to acknowledge the crucial role that Rivers State plays in the country’s economy and warned that law and order could collapse if the crisis were to worsen, with disastrous consequences for the entire country.

The chairmen urged political actors to support peaceful resolution and dialogue, stressing that the judiciary must maintain its impartiality in order to uphold the rule of law and the rule of law.
