The BRIT Awards are intended to be fun and celebration, and London will be filled with glitz and glamour. It’s going to be a memorable night for the music industry, with nominations for Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, and Fred Again for Artist of the Year, and Coldplay for Group of the Year against The Cure, but we can’t forget the outfits.

The ceremony celebrates the music industry in all its splendor, but many people find the red carpet to be their favorite scene. Celebrities have benefited from a long history of experimenting with new styles and showcasing original collaborations with renowned fashion houses while appearing on the red carpet of the BRIT Awards. In consequence, the occasion has come to be regarded as one of the most fashionable nights on the British calendar.

1977 marked Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee and the first BRIT Awards. The winners included Pink Floyd and Elton John, two of the most recognizable artists in music history. These were the British Record Industry Britannia Centenary Awards at the beginning of the year.

We looked through the archives to see some of our favorite outfits from the iconic red carpet ahead of the Brit Awards on Saturday.

Harry Styles ‘ all black Nina Ricci number

Style is a familiar name for Harry Styles, who has a unique sense of style. Harry Styles had one of his best looks to date on the red carpet at the BRIT Awards in 2023. His long-term stylist, Harry Lambert, dressed Styles in a custom Nina Ricci suit designed by Harris Reed. A large floral choker and black boots complete the outfit, which was a black velvet suit with large tuxedo labels.

Geri Halliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress

The BRIT Awards are recognizable for their iconic Union Jack Dress. The front of this ultra-mini dress, which was designed by Gucci and wore by Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell, is decorated with the United Kingdom’s flag and a white brace symbol.

Halliwell donned the outfit while performing the songs “Wannabe” and “Who Do You Think You Are” at the 1997 BRIT Awards. That evening, the group won two awards. The dress currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive item of clothing that a pop star has ever sold at auction.

The dress topped an online poll that evaluated the top ten most famous dresses from the past 50 years, surpassing Marilyn Monroe’s white halter neck from “The Seven Year Itch” in 2010, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Amy Winehouse’s ‘ Power Dress ‘

Amy Winehouse, a six-time Grammy winner, won the award for Best British Female Artist at the BRIT Awards in 2007 with her performance in “Power Dress” by Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. Winehouse styled the bright yellow mini dress with a contrasting lacey black balconette bra, a red heart-shaped cross-body bag, her classic black eyeliner, a red lip and her infamous beehive hairstyle.

Lady Gaga’s tribute to Alexandra McQueen

No one can love a red carpet more than Lady Gaga, in my opinion. The American pop artist is renowned for her eccentric style and bold fashion choices, always pushing boundaries.

In 2010, Lady Gaga made her debut at the Brit Awards, captivating the audience with her stripped-back performances of ‘ Telephone ‘ and ‘ Dance in the Dark’. She dedicated these songs to Alexander McQueen, her close friend and renowned designer, who tragically passed away shortly before the release of these songs.

For the occasion, she wore a gown designed by Francesco Scognamiglio, which resembled a three-tiered wedding cake, complete with a Venetian-inspired headpiece.

Cher’s sequined mini dress

Cher is known for her love of sparkly outfits, and at the 1999 BRIT Awards, she showcased this perfectly. The American singer paired effortlessly with velvet trousers and a stunning sequined mini dress. To complete her look, Cheryl wore a bejewelled headpiece to her platinum blonde wig. She added a black cardigan, tying the entire ensemble together.

Destiny’s Child in matching green dresses

In 2001, Destiny’s Child was rapidly gaining popularity. Known for their show-stopping fashion, they continue to be admired for their style today. After the release of their chart-topping single ‘ Survivor, ‘ Destiny’s Child paid tribute to the music video by attending the BRIT Awards in stunning green outfits.

Wearing the same fabric but with different designs, Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams looked sensational as they posed together. They performed a memorable performance on stage that not only lit up the red carpet but also won over the enthralled audience.

At the 2002 BRIT Awards, Australian singer Kylie Minogue performed her hit single “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”. During her performance, Minogue wore a striking white corseted mini dress designed by the Italian fashion house Dolce &amp, Gabbana.

She complemented the dress with thigh-high silver boots and silver jewellery, creating a refreshingly cool look. When Kylie hid her outfit underneath a thick red coat on the red carpet, viewers were surprised.
