Liam Roberts, who was kicked in a head-high tackle by Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta on Saturday in the third round of the FA Cup, was subject to “disgusting” abuse from Millwall, which Millwall have condemned.

After the incident, Mateta had to be stretchered off the field of play after receiving eight minutes of treatment, and she later required 25 stitches for a severe left ear laceration.

Millwall claimed Roberts, 30, apologized to Mateta that evening, which was later accepted.

The Lions claimed that the incident’s reporting had “contributed to an unwarranted character assassination” and “fueled abhorrent online abuse toward Roberts.”

Following Saturday’s unfortunate collision with Jean-Philippe Mateta, the Championship team said, “The club are disgusted by abuse directed at goalkeeper Liam Roberts.”

The investigation into Liam’s death, as well as the scandalous claims made by some news organizations and prominent sports figures that he intended to harm Jean-Philippe, have all contributed to his unjustified character killing and fueled abhorrent online abuse toward him.

Steve Parish, the chairman of Crystal Palace, claimed Roberts had “endangered a fellow professional and possibly his life,” while Oliver Glasner, the palace manager, claimed the incident “could have potentially ended JP’s career.”

Parish said to BBC One during the live broadcast of the game that he had never seen a challenge like it during the entire career. I believe Roberts needs to take a long, hard look at himself because that is the most careless challenge I’ve ever seen on a football field.

Martin Keown, a former Arsenal defender, described it as “like a kung-fu kick.” How he managed to raise his foot that high is unbelievable. Terrible, horrifying challenge

Some Millwall supporters chanted “let him die” toward Mateta while he was receiving oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off. and immediately taken to the hospital.

The Football Association has criticized those chants, but it has sincerecognized that they do not contravene their rules.

If Roberts’ suspension for serious foul play is determined to be insufficient, the Football Association may extend it to more than three games.

Alex Neil, the manager of Millwall, stated to BBC Radio London that he thought Roberts was deserving of punishment.

“I’m not accepting anyone saying Liam tried to hurt the player,” Neil remarked. Five minutes into the game, we are attempting to win.

We wish the lad the best and that he recovers from a serious injury. For me, it is completely off the mark to believe that Liam would intentionally harm him.

No player at Millwall Football Club ever leaves the field with the intention of hurting another, the club’s statement read. Liam, who personally apologized to Jean-Philippe on Saturday evening, was immediately accepted.
