Meghan Markle, better known as the Duchess of Sussex, has recently been the subject of new controversy following the revelation that she used HRH on a friend’s gift card and a hamper.
Meghan Markle has been embroiled in controversy this week after using the HRH title in a gift basket that she once sent to a friend. It comes after her and Prince Harry had agreed not to use the title when they stepped back from royal duties.
Meghan, 43, and Prince Harry, 40, announced that they would be stepping back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family in January 2020. Just days later, some of the family attended the so-called Sandringham Summit, which is said to have involved discussions about the future. It was later announced that the couple would retain their Her Royal Highness and His Royal Highness – abbreviated to HRH – titles respectively. However, it was stated that an agreement meant that they would not “actively” use them.
The couple stated at the time that they would “retain” their HRH titles in a statement posted on their website. However, as a result of the change in their roles, Prince Harry and Meghan decided to stop using such titles.
Their statement read: “As agreed and set out in January, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will retain their ‘HRH’ prefix, thereby formally remaining known as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer actively use their HRH titles as they will no longer be working members of the family as of Spring 2020.”
A statement from Buckingham Palace at the time read similarly: “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family. […] This new model will take effect in the Spring of 2020.”
However, this week’s news that Meghan used HRH on a note that was given to podcast host Jamie Kern Lima has sparked controversy. With the appreciation of HRH The Duchess of Sussex, the note reads: “With the compliments.”
Meghan was a guest on an episode of her podcast, the Jamie Kern Lima Show, where her pal Jamie shared a photo of the hamper and the note. In the episode that was made public yesterday, she also addressed the gift.
Ice cream and homemade jam sauce were included in Meghan’s hamper, according to Jamie. She claimed that she had received the hamper at a difficult time to “see if that helps lighten]her load.”
An insider has revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan retained their HRH titles but do not use them for commercial purposes and don’t use the publicly. “While they do not publicly use ‘HRH’, this was a personal gift and their titles remain,” they added.
It’s been reported that it was sent to Jamie over a year ago. In a teaser for the podcast, in which Meghan discusses her new As Ever brand, Jamie states: “I have had your jam in my refrigerator all year.” And a source suggested to the Daily Mail recently that the photo shared by Jamie was taken before Meghan launched As Ever last month.
Earlier today, The Mirror reported that the Duchess of Sussex’s use of a royal monogram to send her new lifestyle brand to social media influencers goes against the late Queen’s wishes, according to insiders.
