Fans of Polo, a docu-series exploring the glitzy world of the adored equestrian sport, were drawn to Netflix for a sneak peak at the latest documentary series from Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which premiered on December 10th. Although the 2022 documentary had less of an impact and revealed his dislike of the royal family, the show did provide a unique look into one of Duchess Meghan’s hidden talents.

The five-episode series followed some of the world’s top polo players in the lead-up to the 2024 US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida. Prince Harry also had the opportunity to show off his equestrian prowess at the Royal Salute Polo Challenge charity match for Sentebale, which was the same event where his wife Meghan displayed her impressive Spanish language prowess.

After Prince Harry revealed to his teammate that Meghan was fluent in Spanish, the legendary polo player Adolfo Cambiaso was seen conversing with the couple as the scenes unfolded. Surprised by the disclosure, an impressed Adolfo exclaimed: “Really”? prior to the pair’s quick exchange in Spanish.

Meghan Markle revealed her connection to Argentina, saying, “I lived there about 20 years ago. In Palermo Viejo. Las Canitas too”, according to a translation. It’s thought that Meghan’s fluency in Spanish comes from her time at Northwestern University, where she interned at the US. Embassy in Buenos Aires and from studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, reports the Express.

“That’s great. That’s where the polo fields were”, he commented, to which the Duchess of Sussex expressed her particular fondness for “the 25th of May”, Argentina’s national day. At the end of their conversation, Cambiaso cheekily asked Prince Harry, “Do you speak Spanish”?, prompting laughter from Meghan who wrapped an arm around her husband and confidently said “Yes”.

Caught off guard, Harry sheepishly admitted: “He knows I don’t”! but then conceded, “Well, yes. A little, a little”.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in Colombia
Meghan frequently used Spanish during her earlier this year-long tour of Colombia.

Meghan’s Spanish proficiency is just one of her many talents that this year have attracted attention because her linguistic prowess were already evident during her earlier travels to Colombia. On the whim of Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez’s invitation, both Meghan and Harry had traveled to the South American nation for a four-day tour in August.

On the second day of their tour, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle both brushed up on their Spanish in a primary school class in Santa Fe’s Colegio La Giraldaon. Meghan and Harry had conversations about their five-year-old son Archie with an enthusiastic youngster while Harry introduced the children by asking their names.

Meghan surprised attendees later on in the tour by giving a panel discussion aimed at empowering Afro-Colombian women with a speech in Spanish. Meghan removed her earpiece and began speaking to the audience directly in their native language, expressing her “deep appreciation for the Colombian hospitality.” She praised the country’s history and culture, described the visit as a dream, and emphasized how close to home she felt.
