The Duchess of Edinburgh has been referred to as the Royal Family’s “secret weapon,” but that wasn’t always the case. She appears to navigate public life with ease.

In fact, Sophie, the the wife of the late Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, has previously been candid about how it “took her a while to find her feet” after leaving behnd a successful career in PR to becoming a full-time royal. But now many years on Sophie, who who reaches her landmark 60th birthday tomorrow, appears to be one of the monarchy’s most safest pair of hands.

Meghan Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry, Sophie’s nephew, was announced by the late Queen as a duke of cambridge, so it seemed only natural that the late Queen had suggested the Duchess would assist with the royal newcomer.

However, according to a book, Meghan “made it clear” she didn’t need Sophie’s help and would instead rely on her new husband. When Kate and Harry wed in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex announced her intention to “hit the ground running” and become a full royal.

But author and friend of the royals Gyles Brandreth in his book, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, he writes: “The Queen (who, of course, had seen it all before) understood that Harry’s girl might find adjusting to Royal life ‘ challenging to begin with ‘ (as she put it). ‘ Although it is very jolty, you’ll soon get used to it, “? that was Her Majesty’s experience going back many years.

” To help Meghan, the Queen suggested that her daughter-in-law, Sophie Wessex, would be an ideal mentor. ‘ Sophie can help show you the ropes, ‘ said the Queen. “Meghan made it clear that she did not require Sophie’s assistance. She had Harry”.

Meghan and Sophie’s relationship was brought into focus in September when they shared a vehicle with them while attending the Queen’s state funeral and her coffin-carrying procession in 2022. Meghan and Sophie have been compared to each other because they both underwent a significant transition when they first started out as middle-class citizens and founded a PR firm before joining the royal family.

Sophie and the former monarch enjoyed a movie together and attended several church services together. Her late Majesty was also very close to Viscount James and Lady Louise Windsor, her youngest grandchildren.

Sophie visited the Sussexes at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor as the first member of the royal family, according to The Times. Sophie made the comparison between her and Meghan’s in a rare interview with The Sunday Times.

Speaking to the paper, she compared Meghan and Harry’s experience to hers with Edward, she commented: “Remember I’d had five years to adjust]to royal life]. And for our six-month engagement, I was even staying at Buckingham Palace. Not that you are “aware” of how things will turn out.

Speaking about the Sussexes exit from the firm, she added: “I just hope they will be happy.? She continued, “We all try to help any new members of the family, but perhaps more pointedly, that the royal family does everything in their power to help newcomers adjust to the royal life.”
