Meghan Markle speaks with the co-founder of IT Cosmetics Jamie Kern Lima in a brand-new episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, and shares business advice she received from “mentor and friend” Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle’s “mentor and friend,” gave her business advice as she was considering launching her lifestyle brand, according to Meghan Markle. The Duchess of Sussex revealed this in the most recent episode of Confessions of a Female Founder, in which she chats with Jamie Kern Lima, co-founder of IT Cosmetics.
Meghan describes how chat show host Oprah, who she gave a dazzling interview to in 2021, told her to “encapsulate your essence” when she was deciding whether to launch her brand As Ever, which has so far sold fruit spreads, honey, and tea, and how she plans to launch their business.
I just liked making jam at first, Meghan says. I merely enjoyed making preserves and jam. And it changed from the initials “OK, I’m gonna share this jam with a lot of friends and family” to “People really like it and bring me joy.” so that I can spread it more widely.
I was afraid of failing or losing my opinion at first, so I thought, “I’ll just do small batch jam from home.” And I had to take a step back and consider what I was doing, asking, “Am I playing small because I want to play small?” Or am I just playing small out of fear? “
And she continued, “Oprah, who I know as a mentor and friend to you, was the one who said, “There are tons of things you could put your name on. However, once you figure out how to encapsulate your essence, you’ll know’, depending on how you like to appear to others.
After creating products for people with rosacea and hyperpigmentation, Jamie, Meghan’s guest this week, established her business IT Cosmetics in 2008. She sold the company to L’Oreal under a billion-dollar deal, but she claims to have been turned down for “three years straight” because of her unsuccessful attempts to sell her goods in stores.
Meghan also reveals how, due to her freckles, she was told not to audition for beauty roles when she was an actress. When I was an actor auditioning for commercials, Meghan says, “That would have been.” And I can recall that my commercial agent refused to work with me because of my freckles in the beauty and skincare ads.
She praised Jamie for using skin-to-nes and women of all ages as her models, adding, “That was such new thinking then. That was so unheard of when you brought it to market. It might now seem more typical. Meghan and her husband have a new “honeymoon” feeling since they have “a little breathing space” after returning from their royal duties, according to the new podcast, which was released the day after Meghan made her appearance on Jamie’s show.
Meghan claimed that the couple struggled to fully enjoy one another’s company at the beginning of their relationship because the media quickly focused on them in “the trenches.” Harry and the King and the Prince of Wales had strained relations before the pair started dating in 2016 and got married in 2018. They initially took on royal duties before deciding to step down in their current roles in 2020.
She said, “You have to imagine that everyone has, say, butterflies at first. Then, together, we immediately entered the trenches. Yes, almost immediately after six months of dating. So now, seven years later, when you have a little bit of breathing room, you can just enjoy each other in a completely new way, which is why I think it’s more of a honeymoon for us now. The duchess praised her husband’s “safety” while praising the family.
Meghan revealed that she emails her children Archie and Lilibet to secret email addresses she has set up for them to read as they get older, and that she also became emotional when she mentioned Archie and Lilibet.
“At night before going to bed, I email them, “Here’s your report card from today,” or, oh my gosh, wasn’t that the funniest thing this morning? Or you two are seen having breakfast in this picture, or playing. The things you won’t be able to frame, the things you won’t be able to put pen to paper in a journal, but which they will eventually see at some point in their lives, perhaps when they’re 16 or 18?
Here’s an email I’ve been keeping for you, I’ll say. I wanted to tell you how much I love you and how proud I am of you in every way that comes to mind.
