Katie Ledecky, an American, came home with the bronze medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, where Summer McIntosh from Canada won the 400-meter freestyle competition.
McIntosh, 18, who has three Olympic gold medals, and Ledecky, 28, who has nine Olympic gold medals, were seen as foes in the event.
McIntosh was in control from the beginning, winning in three minutes, 56 seconds, with Ledecky and Li Bingjie from China coming in second.
McIntosh will compete in the 400 and 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter butterfly, and 800-freestyle events, joining Michael Phelps as the only swimmer to have won five individual titles at a single world championship.
I was super strong and in charge that entire 400-meter freestyle race. Overall, I believed I had the willpower. I’m just going to try it out one more time, day by day.
Ben Proud won the men’s 50m butterfly final behind Switzerland’s Noe Ponti in a time of 22.74 seconds to place second in his semi-final.
