Mbappe double at Villarreal takes Real Madrid top of LaLiga

Real Madrid rallied to defeat Villarreal 2-1 and move temporarily to the top of the LaLiga standings thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s two goals.

When Alex Baena’s corner was deflected by Aurelien Tchouameni, Juan Foyth scored from close range, the hosts opened the scoring on Saturday in the seventh minute.

Real Madrid equaled ten minutes later when Mbappe seized on Brahim Diaz’s blocked shot and the ball landed at his feet for a close finish.

Six minutes later, Lucas Vazquez slotted home from a pass and scored his 20th league goal of the year.

Mbappe latched on to Vinicius Jr.’s through ball in the second half, but the offside flag was raised.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti referred to Wednesday’s grueling Champions League shootout victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid as the final time we’ll play a game with less than 72 hours of rest.

Real leads the table with 60 points, three clear of second-placed Barcelona, who are still playing after their game against Osasuna was postponed last week and will face third-placed Atletico on Sunday.

Kylian Mbappe scores his second goal for Real Madrid on March 15, 2025, at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica.
