Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey’s gesture to Princess Kate and her husband Prince William as they arrived in the Royal Box at Wimbledon saw him hailed a “southern gentleman”.
The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in time to see Jannik Sinner lift the trophy on the last day of the championships, as he defeated Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Before the match, the family made quite the entrance as most of the crowd stood up to applaud as they entered Centre Court.
Video footage captured William and Kate, along with their children Princess Charlotte and Prince George, making their way through the crowds. They shook hands with a few other guests in the posh seats, with 55-year-old film star Matthew spotted in the background.
As the royal couple descended the stairs, Matthew could be seen standing up in his seat as a sign of respect, but others around him remained sitting down. The moment caught the attention of fans on X, with one tweeting: “Matthew McConaughey standing to applaud the Prince and Princess of Wales. What a lovely southern gentleman.”
Another echoed: “Real class!” while another posted: “Kate’s looking lovely, as she did yesterday as well. And the applause for her is well deserved. People genuinely wish her well, after what she’s been through.” A fourth person gave the film star a nod, adding: “Matthew was raised right. Always something I have admired.”
It came as Princess Kate’s private secretary has caused a stir at Wimbledon this year, after joining the Waleses in the royal box over the weekend. Kate made her first 2025 Wimbledon appearance on Saturday for the women’s final, before being joined by Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte for the men’s final on Sunday.
Kate, who is the patron of All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, presented the winners and runners-up trophies to the women’s finalists, consoling tearful runner-up Amanda Asiminova, as she put her hand on the American player’s arm and telling her: “Keep your head high.”
As the Princess was welcomed to the royal box on Saturday by a chorus of applause, some were distracted from Kate’s arrival by her handsome aide. Kate was accompanied by her private secretary, Lieutenant Colonel Tom White, who stole the show during the her highly anticipated arrival.
Fawning over the 36-year-old, who was wearing a double-breasted cream blazer with a shirt and tie, one viewer wrote: “He’s a fox!” while another added: “I mean, silver fox.” One person said: “Well he sure is dishy,” while another added: “Flirt mode is on,” followed by a series of heart-eyes emojis. Another fan candidly wrote: “Is it a prerequisite for equerrys to be good looking?!”
Lt Col White first joined the Royal Household in 2020 as the late Queen’s Squire, where he worked until her death on September 8th 2022. The Colonel was the first commando of the Royal Marines to hold the title. As well as being a royal aide, White is also a talented tennis player who fans say shares an uncanny resemblance to the retired Wimbledon icon, Roger Federer.
On Saturday Kate watched on as Iga Swiatek claimed her first ever Wimbledon title as she wiped the floor with Amanda Anisimova. The Pole claiming a 6-0, 6-0 victory on Centre Court – a result that hadn’t been seen for 114 years at SW19. She has been a regular at Wimbledon since she married into the Royal Family in 2011 and rarely misses the occasion.
