The Busted star’s struggle with addiction led to a rocky patch in their relationship between Matt and Emma Willis in 2016.
Matt Willis has revealed there was a heart-wrenching moment in his life where he urged his wife Emma to leave him, admitting he worried he’d lost her trust for good after relapsing in his battle with addiction.
The Busted star, 41, spoke about Emma – who recently hailed her husband for staying by her side while undergoing heart surgery – after previously being open about his past struggles with substance abuse.
He made the decision to discuss the impact of his 16-year marriage in a recent episode of his On The Mend podcast. Matthew admitted that he told Emma to “get out while she still could” during a particularly heated conversation. He stated, “I put my family through a process I never wanted to.”
“And that can eat you up,” the statement read. You are aware that that can cause you harm, so I put the effort in. Everything comes from the action.
Matt has previously discussed using up to 6 grams of cocaine per day during the 2016 relapse, and he continued to be honest about the guilt and shame that followed.
He said, “I think the other option is standing up and saying, “Yes, I messed up, yeah, I messed up, and I’m sorry, I’m going to try harder and I’m going to try to be a better person.” And that shame and guilt fade over time. And it has, in my opinion.
When Matt was at his worst, Emma, 48, made a decision to stay put. Instead, she continued to believe that her husband could change.
I never thought my wife would trust me again, Matt mused. She does, too. She actually does. I’ve shown her that I’m trustworthy, which is why. These things were earned, not given.
He continued to say that speaking the right way wasn’t enough; it was about demonstrating consistency in his actions. Over the years, the couple has dealt with a number of difficulties, including Matt’s well-known rehab stints and a relationship that developed into Scientology.
But through it all they’ve remained determined to grow together, and even committed to couple’s therapy when they hit a rough patch in 2020. Now their relationship has entered a brand new phase on screen as the couple started their first joint presenting gig.
The Willises are currently co-hosting Love Is Blind: UK. The hit Netflix reality show places singles in “pods”, where they date and get engaged without ever seeing each other face to face. They only meet in person once a proposal has taken place, before testing out their relationship in the real world.
Matt says working with Emma has helped them grow closer, but he admits he was initially “nervous” about it. He continued, “We used to be apart and would typically go to work alone, but now we can work together and spend more time together.” It’s great”.
