The 100th birthday eponymous actor Dick Van Dyke, who will turn 100 next month, described the sacrifices he had to make to ensure a successful career and a happy life for his family.
As he reaches the milestone age of 100 next month, it’s perhaps understandable that Mary Poppins icon Dick Van Dyke has a few regrets in his life. And in a recent interview, the Hollywood legend has revealed that one regret he has is that he was not able to be as present in his childrens’ lives while striving to become a successful actor.
With Margie Willett, his late ex-wife Margie, he had four children: Christian, 75, Barry, 74, Stacy, 70, and Carrie, 64. He openly acknowledged in an interview with People that “the whole thing was putting some money together and getting a home.” “In the beginning, I was raising] in a family without any money.
He continued, “They probably got neglected at some point because, so to speak, I was working really hard to escape poverty, but I haven’t received any complaints from anyone.”
In anticipation of his upcoming milestone birthday, Dick continues to grow in stature and has just released a book called 100 Rules for Living to 100, which follows readers through his entire life to date.
He continued to state to the publication that, “I finally purchased a home on the GI Bill, but I think the most challenging thing was that I did game shows.”
He continued, “I played nightclubs. I completed everything. I once worked with a partner in a nightclub and at one point was doing a disc jockey show at 5 in the morning.
He acknowledged that between his two jobs, he only slept for three to four hours. He seems to be thankful for having worked in an area that he enjoys, despite the fact that he still finds himself content.
He compared himself to those who work an office job in an effort to raise their family, calling it rare. However, he resisted the fact that he would have been compensated to be an actor.
At 54 years old, Dick married Arlene Silver in 2012, and he praised her for keeping him young at heart.
She is in charge of keeping me present, he continued. She made me smile every day, every day. She is delightful. She has a lot of responsibility and can get me to dance or sing… I’m simply fortunate.
Most of his close friends have sadly passed away, which is a disadvantage of living such a long life.
He pondered how he would have felt about making The Odd Couple a remake with his late friend and co-star Ed Asner during a Q&A at a Dick and Arlene Van Dyke Present Vandy Camp event.
Unfortunately, Ed passed away in 2021 at the age of 91. He declared to the audience, “We lost it, and that would have been so fun. I’ve lost a lot of friends.
And Arlene said, “He’s outlived everyone,” at this very moment. Living to almost 100 is a curse, right? But he came to the conclusion, “Well, life’s been good to me, as always.” I have no complaints.
