Former The Great British Bake Off judge Dame Mary Berry expressed joy at still having her long-term husband by her side, following almost 60 years of marriage
Dame Mary Berry has made a rare admission about her husband’s health while opening up about her own lifestyle at 90. The beloved chef celebrated the milestone back in March with a big family gathering in her hometown of Bath.
While now may seem like the perfect time for Mary to retire, she insists she has no plans to slow down and hopes to continue working for as long as she’s able.
Reflecting on her age, The Great British Bake Off’s former judge said she feels “so lucky” to be in good health.
She also expressed gratitude for still having her husband of almost 60 years, Paul Hunnings, by her side, though insisted that he isn’t as fortunate health-wise.
Speaking to Yours Magazine, Mary shared: “He’s terribly frail, but very cherished and well looked after.
“Just as I was leaving, I gave him a little plate of smoked salmon, a wedge of lemon, and I cut the crusts off the bread. And though he doesn’t have a drink with it, I’ll do the drinking when I get in.”
Discussing her lifestyle, the chef described herself as “very much a morning person” who enjoys getting outdoors.
When it comes to food, she’s also mindful about what she eats and avoids snacking between meals.
Like her mother, who lived until 105, she additionally likes to keep fit by walking regularly.
“My husband is always in the biscuit tin, we’ve been married 59 years and I’ve still got no control whatsoever! I eat what I enjoy, but I eat very carefully,” she laughed.
When previously asked how she maintains her figure while sampling cakes on The Great British Bake Off, she told The Belfast Telegraph: “It’s quite simple – I just make sure the next meal is small.
“I don’t believe in cutting out certain foods; a little of everything is good for you. There’s nothing wrong with a slice of cake with tea, which I enjoy most afternoons, or strawberries with a big dollop of cream – just don’t be dipping into the biscuit tin all day. Moderation is key.”
Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Woman & Home, Mary said it remains “a great pleasure” to care for her 93-year-old husband.
“That’s what I promised to do – for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And we are very happy in our dotage,” she shared.
