Bethan Shufflebotham, a fashion writer, visited her store to pick out her favorite pieces from the new range, and he foresees these trousers to be a sell-out.

I was supposed to be taking part in No Spend September this month, but I failed less than a week in. Why? Marks and Spencer’s new autumn range.

In theory, No Spend September is a self-imposed challenge, serving both as an antidote to summer overspending and a way to get creative with clothes that I already own. But in practice, it lasted all of five days thanks to a pair of faux leather trousers.

The second I laid eyes on these Leather-Looking, Textured Barrel Leg Trousers, I knew that they’d be one of the first items to sell out this season. I simply could not leave behind, and it turns out I was 100% right to do so – my size is already out of stock online.

September might still offer the odd late-summer day, but the shops have already shifted into autumn/winter mode. Think richer textures, deeper hues, and on-trend silhouettes – and these trousers tick all three boxes.

First of all, they come in a rich wine-burgundy shade that is warm brown in color. The M&amp, S pair of pants is perfect for pairing with 2025’s other trending shades like butter yellow and chocolate, but I’m not a fan of burgundys that lean cool and purple.

As for the shape, barrel trousers have quietly taken centre stage this year. The high waist appeals to the millennials and above among us who are not ready to reconsider a low-rise trouser, with the sculpted leg being effortlessly cool. The fabric is relaxed enough to be comfortable for every day , but still structured enough to wear to the office or for evening occasions.

Finally, the leather-like finish appears to be much more expensive than the £40 price tag would suggest. The textured fabric looks seriously elevated while remaining breathable, unlike faux leather, which can frequently come off as cheap and clammy.

For a more matte-look leather trouser, New Look has these Burgundy Faux Leather Barrel Leg Trousers in the sale for £19.99, down from £39.99. Despite being half price, they’re still available in every size from 6 to 22, but unlike M&S, they don’t have the benefit of different lengths.

For those who prefer real leather, HUSH has these Leather Jack Barrel Trousers, coming in considerably more expensive at £320. This pull-on pair is designed with an elasticated waistband for ultimate comfort and is made in ‘buttery soft’ leather.

What really sealed the deal for me is how versatile these M&S trousers are – they’re a great alternative to jeans, and can be matched with pretty much anything already in your wardrobe. Think oversized knit and sporty trainers like the Adidas SL72 for a weekend coffee date, or with loafers and a blouse tucked in for the office.

A silk camisole, strappy heels, and blazer would be ideal for a date night. To really tie in with some of the hottest trends of the upcoming season, layer up with ballet flats, a plain t-shirt, and trench coat.
