Manhunt for ex-US soldier suspected of killing 4 in Montana bar

A former US soldier is wanted in connection with a shooting that has left four people dead in a bar in the state of Montana.

Four people were found dead at the scene at The Owl Bar in Anaconda on Friday morning, according to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, and the shooting occurred at around 10:30 am (16:30 GMT).

Michael Paul Brown, a veteran of the armed forces for 45 years, has been identified as the suspect. According to owner David Gwerder and public records, Brown reportedly lived right next to the bar.

Before Brown fled the scene, Gwerder claimed that a bartender and three customers had been killed when he was not present at the time of the incident.

He was aware of everyone there drinking. Gwerder said, “I can assure you of that.” He “had no running dispute with any of them.” I believe he simply snapped.

A SWAT team cleared Brown’s home in Anaconda, a town of about 9, 000 people located southwest of Bozeman, about 109 miles (175km) west of the city of Bozeman.

A “massive manhunt,” led by Montana Senator Steve Daines, is being conducted, with the aid of drones.

Brown is “believed to be armed and dangerous,” according to authorities, who said he was last seen west of Anaconda in the Stump Town neighborhood.

According to a social media post from the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center, he should not be approached if seen, whereas residents of Anaconda are advised to stay home and lock their doors.

As police search for Brown in a wooded, mountainous area, more than a dozen police officers have converged on Stump Town, locking it down so no one can enter or leave.

A retired police officer who lives in the area claimed that as officers moved among the trees, a police helicopter flew over a nearby mountainside.

Brown was a crewman for the US army from 2001 to 2005 and from March 2004 to March 2005, according to a US army spokesman. From 2006 to 2009, Brown served in the Montana National Guard.

Governor of Montana, Greg Gianforte, stated in a social media post that he was “closely monitoring the situation involving an active shooter in Anaconda.”
