With a tense 5-4 victory over Zhao Xintong, Stephen Maguire secured his place in the Wuhan Open’s final 16 spots.

The 44-year-old Scot forced a deciding frame against the world champion from China with breaks of 58, 71, 92, and 119.

Zhao potted frame ball before launching the brown cannon into the pocket, which kept the game alive.

With a break of 45, Maguire, who won his first ranking contest in five years, sunk a few long pots to claim a 65-61 victory on the black, clearing the table with a break of 45.

“I was thinking, “please clear up,” as I prepared myself for if I had a chance. Thankfully, World Snooker saw me through it,” Maguire said.

“He was clearly loved by the crowd.” However, he still needs a lot. He is carrying a whole nation, in terms of pressure.

Xiao Guodong, the reigning champion, made it 5-3 over David Grace while Marco Fu, the reigning champion, defeated 5-1 by Hong Kong’s Marco Fu.

Mark Williams, a Welshman, defeated Joe O’Connor 5-1 on the break of 129 and 95 to claim another comfortable victory.

Following David Gilbert’s 5-2 dismissal, Williams will face fellow former world champion Mark Selby.

Judd Trump, the reigning world champion, defeated fellow Englishman Jack Lisowski 5-3 to claim his place in the rankings.
