Macy Gray ‘shellshocked’ as reason why she stormed off The Masked Singer revealed

On Saturday night, the Masked Singer UK announced Macy Gray as the new American singer toad in the hole.

Bear, Pufferfish, Bush, Bear and Toad in the Hole all performed, but, unfortunately, one mystery person had to go home and it was none other than Toad. As per the show’s routine, the person behind the costume had to remove their disguise to reveal their identity.

However, before Macy’s identity was revealed, she walked off the stage when host Joel Dommett announced the sad news that she had to go home. The star was later revealed to be American singer Macy, who did not appear to be impressed with leaving the reality show, after home fans were shocked.

According to a source, Macy was simply “blindsided” by being one of the first to leave The Masked Singer after reaching the US version’s 2023 final as Sea Queen. The insider claimed that she was “almost shellshocked to begin with” and that she was soon “gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – even though she did so brilliantly – so was completely blindsided.”

They claimed in an interview with The Sun that she had a very raw reaction and wanted to leave. “It was the shock of it for her as well as the upset. That is evidence of how badly a professional performer felt, to say the least. The insider continued, “We had to talk her round a while backstage.”

For comment, The Mirror reached out to her representatives and ITV. Fans took to social media to share their thoughts on what transpired during the awkward moment when Macy appeared to be returning to the stage unimpressed. One person wrote on X: “Well that was awkward… #maskedsingeruk”.

A second added: “Wow is Macy Gray really that heartbroken that she’s been kicked off Masked Singer”, while a third chimed in: “Oh everyone looks so awkward. She walked off stage. cannot deal #maskedsingeruk #maskedsinger”. Another said: “Did anyone else feel awkward watching the last few minutes of that.. Macy Gray pls #maskedsingeruk”.

The judges had long since been persuaded that Toad in the Hole was Macy Gray, who had performed the well-known Boney M hit Sunny on the show, and they had chosen to send her home rather than Bear, who had to sing twice to save themselves.

Asked by comedian Joel Dommett, 39, if she had fun on the show, Sweet Baby singer Macy simply answered: “Yeah”. Panellist Jonathan Ross apologised to Macy, in a joking manner, for Joel’s shorts, with the show’s host saying he really appreciated her being on the show.

Macy, 57, is best known for her songs, including I Try, which won the 2001 Grammy for best female pop vocal performance, performed on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival. She performed Bobby Hebb’s Sunny, and panelist Mo Gilligan speculated that Tracy Chapman might be the singer. Macy, who wore a Shakespearean-style outfit, performed Miami by Will Smith, while the character Bush sang Hold My Hand by Jess Glynne.

Elsewhere, new panellist, Maya Jama said Pufferfish’s performance of Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper was “stunning”. Wilson gave a performance of Copacabana (At the Copa) by Barry Manilow, and special guest Suranne Jones speculated that Tony Hadley, a member of the Spandau Ballet, was the star of the mask, while panelist Davina McCall speculated about Simon Le Bon, a vocalist for Duran Duran.

After saving Wolf, Bush, and Pufferfish, Bear and Toad In The Hole returned. The panellists ultimately chose to save Bear while The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber performed Stay and Toad In The Hole sang Roxette’s It Must Have Been Love. Sir Mo Farah, who portrays host Joel inside the costume, was revealed last weekend as the celebrity inside.
