Although Jess Carter, an English star, and German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger initially rejected the idea of a romance with their best friend, she later realized that the pair are in a relationship.
England’s Jess Carter is loved up with fellow footballer Ann-Katrin Berger, but before they got together, Jess had never dated a woman.
Ann-Katrin and the 27-year-old defender met when they both played for Birmingham City FC in May 2016.
Although they were teammates, they barely spoke for the first six months. “At first, I thought she was arrogant,” Ann-Katrin told The Guardian. “But the more I got to know her, the more I was drawn to her.”
Jess was ready for independence while she was still residing with her family in Barford, Warwickshire.
She discovered Ann was looking for a housemate by the year 2017 and decided to move out. They quickly became close friends, sharing a common love for football and movies, when they moved into Solihull together in February.
Jess initially didn’t think about adding anything to their friendship, even though it had grown. She had just ended a relationship with a man, believing she was straight. She began missing Ann-Katrin that summer while she was away working.
She took a chance and organized a night out, curious whether there might be more than just friendship between them. When a friend encouraged me, I realized that I might regret it if I didn’t try.
Ann-Katrin went on what she intended to call a dinner date with Jess in August 2017. Jess, however, was unaware of the romantic intention.
Jess said, “I thought she meant as friends when she called it a “date.” I never thought twice about it when she paid because Ann is one of the most generous people I know.
Jess had never dated a woman, so they asked her how the evening went, but romance was still on her mind.
Ann-Katrin leapt and kissed her a few days later while they were unwinding at home. She acknowledged that she was anxious. Jess had always seemed to be open-minded, so I wasn’t sure because I’d also heard her talk about guys.
They didn’t immediately discuss it, but a second kiss days later led to a sincere exchange.
Jess said, “I could sense something had changed. “Anna only kisses someone if she is emotionally invested,” she says. “She doesn’t date casually. Although I had a deep love for her as a friend, I was still trying to understand what I was feeling.
Jess informed Ann-Katrin that she wanted to try, but she needed some time. She acknowledged that if something were just a phase, she wouldn’t want to rush into it.
Jess quickly caught up with Ann-Katrin, even though she was initially more certain. They quickly and naturally made progress, and within a few months they were expressing their love for one another.
Last year, the pair announced their engagement with a heartfelt social media post. They revealed the news with a selfie of the couple in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York City after the culmination of the Women’s Super League season.
The couple posed for a selfie alongside one another in a post on X, where Carter’s caption read, “7 years down forever to go,” along with red hearts and ring emojis.
