Lagos Assembly Denies Rumoured Defection Of 27 APC Members To LP

Lagos Assembly Denies Rumoured Defection Of 27 APC Members To LP

The All-Party APC and the opposition Labour Party (LP) have reportedly merged with the Lagos State House of Assembly, but the assembly has denied this rumor. &nbsp,

In a statement on Wednesday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Ogundipe Olukayode, said reports (not by Channels Television) insinuating the defection of members of the Assembly are “false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public”.

The rumored defection was also intended to “sow discord and confusion within the Assembly and among the good people of Lagos State,” according to the Assembly.

Armed security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services were present earlier on Monday, allegedly blocking Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker, from gaining entry until hours later. As lawmakers approved a vote of confidence in her, she became tearful and emotional when she finally presided over plenary.

Following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Assembly speaker and Meranda’s victory, the state legislature has been engaged in a leadership conflict for weeks.

Obasa has insisted that his removal was unlawful and has taken legal action in court after over 36 pro-Meranda lawmakers in the 40-member Assembly pledged their loyalty to the first female speaker.

The House leadership tussle is purely internal, according to the Assembly. No member’s intentions to leave the party are implied by these events. We emphasise, without any ambiguity, that no member of the Assembly is contemplating defection”, the Assembly said.
