Katy Perry to travel to space as part of groundbreaking mission with Jeff Bezos’ wife

After signing up to take a rocket trip, Katy Perry will become the first pop star to travel in space.

The Blue Origin aerospace company, operated by Jezz Bezos, has announced Roar singer Perry, 40, will join an all-female six-person team who will be flying on the upcoming New Shepard NS-31 mission, which was organised by journalist Lauren Sanchez, the wife of American billionaire Mr Bezos.

The team comprises Perry, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bio-astronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and Ms Sanchez. The mission will “challenge]the crew’s] perspectives of Earth”, “empower them” and “create lasting impact that will inspire generations”, according to organisers.

Perry is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with more than 115 billion streams. The New Shepard program, which transports paying customers into outer space, will have conducted 11 human flights this year.

In a social media post, King stated that “we’re going where few have gone before” and made fun of “watching Gayle take to the skies” in the spring.

In a video posted to social media, Ms. Sanchez, 55, stated that she hopes the mission will motivate people to “dream big.” “If someone would have told me that I would be able to go to space one day, I would have definitely, well, I don’t know, laughed”, she said. “I can’t believe it’s happening. I used to hang around the hanger and used to dream that I wanted to fly, and this is even bigger. My dad used to teach people how to fly.

” The incredible women that are going on this flight are extraordinary in all of their fields, but more importantly, they’re incredible storytellers. Therefore, I’m hoping that this flight will transform both for them and the people who will hear their stories. Hopefully it inspires your imagination to “dream big” and make plans for the stars.

Since 2021, Blue Origin has operated short hops to space. Some passengers have been given free rides, while others have paid a hefty sum to experience weightlessness. Mr Bezos, 61, climbed aboard with his brother for the inaugural flight.
