Johnson passed away a few days after his birthday. Jimmybean, who was Garry George Johnson in actuality, passed away suddenly on Friday night.
His death’s cause is still unknown, though. Just two days after his 69th birthday, he passed away. The drummer who founded The Time and played the drums for Prince recently reflected on his life and said he didn’t think about what he had accomplished on stage.
Jellybean said on Facebook last week, “I’ve been blessed to live a life that was shaped by music, community, and the love of people who believed in me long before the world knew my name. When I look back, I don’t think about the big stages or awards first; instead, I think about The Way, a small community center on Minneapolis’ North Side, where a group of young children picked up instruments and made the decision to become who we were meant to be.
I’ve been wondering what “legacy” actually means as I get older. What do I hope to leave behind? What do I want people to know, particularly our young people?
Susannah Melvoin, a fellow musician, shared a touching tribute on her Instagram page after learning about his passing in a heartfelt manner. She remarked, “RIP Jellybean Johnson, I’m heartbroken! Jellybean Johnson, my gorgeous older brother, has passed away. This band was and continues to be a kind of family that cherished all of us with all the love, music, and kindness that we shared.
“Jellybean was a master at loving you like no other brother could!” My big brother kept watch over me and everyone I loved! At the age of 28, he was already a seasoned musical savant, and I met him when I was 19 years old. He had previously played in the past and was expertly selected to form the band we affectionately and legitimately refer to as the family. Because he was the drummer first, the guitarist second, and he switched to playing guitar in this band. He absorbed oxygen as he breathed his guitar in and out. I’m having a hard time getting this out.  ,
His children and their families require our love and support. Send it their way, if you can. This is a significant loss. My heart breaks for you Marty, because of his unwavering love and light. For you, we are here. I’ll post more information soon.
Fans have since started posting tributes on social media, with one stating, “My friend and brother Mr. drum slinger Jellybean Johnson from The Time passed away this evening. Family prays. God-bless. “

When Jellybean moved to North Minneapolis at the age of 13 and started learning music by listening to the radio and using a pair of drumsticks, he was born in Chicago in 2956. He started to gain respect from Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Morris Day, and the late icon, Prince, after honing in on his talent.
Jellybean gained notoriety for his infectious energy throughout each live performance as Minneapolis Sound’s main focus turned out to be his band, The Time.
Jellybean has since established the Minneapolis Sound Museum and continued to play guitar.
