Despite having a 28-year public career, Jane McDonald has had to deal with her difficult personal life, including losing her mother and partner.
After rising to prominence through the BBC’s hit docusoap The Cruise in the late Nineties, Jane McDonald has enjoyed a career that has encompassed chart-topping albums, stage performances, and a decade-long stint on ITV’s Loose Women.
However, away from the spotlight, Jane has faced more than her share of tragedy. Following nearly 14 years with her cherished fiancé Eddie Rothe, Jane devastatingly announced in April 2021 that he had passed away, disclosing that the former Searchers and Liquid Gold drummer had “been battling lung cancer for the last few months”.
Four years after that devastating blow, Jane, 62, acknowledges that “grief stays with you forever.”
She revealed to Yours Magazine that she isn’t rushing to find romance once more. You just don’t know, she said, so I’m not saying I’ll never meet anyone again.
Jane continued, “I have a solidarity with girlfriends in similar circumstances, and having reliable companionship comes from having people.” I’m fortunate to have a network of trustworthy friends. “
She never thinks of Ed in a single day. It’s awful, she continued. You must sit it beside joy, but I won’t be making any changes to this; grief does.
Every day when I think, “You can go one of two ways, and I always have to choose the positive one,” I say. I can see that things are going on in my life right now that Ed wouldn’t have been here.
“I was going to retire, but look at the joy I’m experiencing right now, which I hope others will experience. That’s how I see it, and I believe it to be a gift from him. “
Jean, Jane’s mother, who had lived in a house with her daughter well into her forties, passed away just years after her passing.
Jane and Eddie frequently found themselves apart due to work commitments throughout their protracted engagement. She revealed to Good To Know that she spent six months traveling annually.
I’m never at home, he says. I only return for a short period of time.
She continued, “I think he really likes that I’m not there.” He enjoys having the freedom to eat whatever he wants, watch TV when he wants, and get up when he wants, he claims. “”.
