The backlash surrounding Peter Andre’s most recent film, Jafaican, sees the Mysterious Girl singer play a wheeler-dealer who poses as a violent Jamaican gangster has been addressed.
Singer-turned-actor Peter Andre has hit back at critics slamming his latest movie Jafaican, in which he stars as a faux gangster. The heartthrob behind Mysterious Girl takes centre stage in Fredi Nwaka’s latest comedy romp – playing hustler Gary Buckle.
The character attempts to make a quick buck by pretending to be Jamaican and wearing a fake dreadlock wig.
While Jafaican has garnered positive reviews since its unveiling, the flick has been marred by accusations of cultural appropriation and being labelled “tone-deaf” by some viewers. Nevertheless, Peter Andre rebuffed the backlash aiming at his latest venture.
The pop icon advises skeptical people, saying, “I think it’s very simple to criticize something based on a trailer. I would advise you to “go and watch the movie first,” so you can see the context and what the movie is about.
He continued to tell the Daily Star: “A critic should also be able to criticise, so I understand how it is.”
Andre encouraged naysayers to watch the movie before making a decision, acknowledging that it won’t appeal to everyone. Peter defended his work, saying, “I believe it is really important for everyone to have their own opinions.
I don’t believe it’s appropriate to just assume everyone will approve of what you’re doing, but I’ve always said, “Don’t do that, you shouldn’t do that, that’s not the right song to release, that’s not a good video clip,” I’ve always said.
The actor-turned-thespian, who has appeared in David Brent: Life on the Road, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and Keith Lemon: The Film, explained why he chose to embrace his most recent role.
He resisted being influenced by critics and said, “I would never have accomplished anything if I sat and listened to everyone telling me what to do.” Sometimes, I believe, you just need to push yourself and leave your comfort zone.
A London crook must gather £35,000 to cover his grandmother’s care home expenses in order to pay for her misfortunes in the film. Gary heads off to Jamaica when he learns of a heist that might solve all of his problems. There, he finds himself spiraling downward.
Gary finds himself in a tight spot as locals accept his portrayal of Denton “Kill Man” Powell to snag a deal. In a few ODEON Cinemas, Jafaican is currently showing.
Peter’s kids Princess and Junior were by his side at a recent a red carpet screening for his latest film. The event in London saw the family attend the Genesis Cinema for the private VIP event, posing for photographs ahead of the much-discussed film’s debut.
Peter defended the criticism when he spoke about the film’s promotion on Australian TV earlier in the month: “Well, I mean, I think it’s good to get all kinds of feedback. Although this is not my first lead role, I’ve done many other things before. I’ve played various characters on all of them.
