Eva Speakman, who is one of the co-hosts of the television series The Speakmans, has given some pointers to those who struggle with phobias. She regularly assists those who struggle with them.

No matter what your phobia is, Eva Speakman from TV duo The Speakmans has revealed that there are methods you can attempt to conquer it, even if it seems like it’s becoming “worse” over time. A phobia is an overwhelming, unreasonable fear of a particular object, circumstance, or activity that is disproportionate to the real-world threat that the thing presents, but that is irrelevant to the person with the phobia.

People frequently make great efforts to avoid what they dread, such as avoiding flying to places abroad if they have a fear of airplanes, but this can seriously impair their daily lives, careers, or relationships.

Eva, who is commonly seen on ITV programme This Morning with her husband Nik, said: “Do you have a phobia that feels like it’s getting worse? You’re getting triggered more often and to more things?

If that’s you, please take comfort in the knowledge that this is fairly standard and has two valid justifications.

She argued that “the easier it is for you to access the phobia the more we go down a neural pathway” as we “each time we actually access our phobia.”

Let’s say, as a child, you were teased with a spider, and your fear was born. The second thing is that we associate things with our phobia.

“So, it might be that October and November are the only times it really bothers you because it’s spider season, but you might also find that the shed will soon turn into a problem as a result.”

“You might go round to someone’s house and discover that their bathroom has a spider in it, but you may find it difficult to use because that bathroom has since become a problem.”

“So it seems like the phobia is getting bigger and bigger with each new layer we add,” he said. “This simply means that we are being triggered more frequently because we’ve added more avoidance.”

However, the “good news” is that, as Eva pointed out, “the whole structure falls apart” for those who struggle with phobias.

How do you accomplish this, though?

Eva explained it can be “done with therapy, or adding lots of contra-evidence to your belief”.

People shared their phobias in the comments section, with one woman revealing, “Emetaphobia [the fear of being sick] is completely taking over my life, to the point where I’m afraid when my son starts the nursery and brings home a tummy bug.” I’m afraid because I’m afraid to panic.
