Is Rohl the answer for Rangers? Or ‘rinse and repeat’?

Is Rohl the answer for Rangers? Or ‘rinse and repeat’?

It will not be Steven Gerrard. That much became clear late on Saturday, much to the horror of those who were ready to welcome him back to Ibrox.

Instead, the next Rangers head coach could be Danny Rohl.

The German, who left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in the summer, is reported to be the frontrunner, having also held talks with the Scottish Premiership club in the past week.

The 36-year-old had spells as an assistant with RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and the German national team before taking charge at Hillsborough.

He twice staved off relegation with the embattled South Yorkshire club, finishing 12th in the Championship in his one full season in charge. It was an impressive achievement given Wednesday’s financial struggles.

‘Rohl is best boss I’ve worked under’

One of the major tasks for the next Rangers head coach will be to invigorate and motivate a squad that have flattered to deceive time and time again this season.

Rohl would have no problem making a positive first impression, according to former Scotland midfielder Barry Bannan – Rohl’s captain at Wednesday.

“Danny was really good, he had a winning mindset from his first meeting,” Bannan told BBC Scotland.

“He was a young manager so the boys were intrigued to see how he would go about it, but we all left that meeting knowing we had a top, top manger on our hands. He was only young but he came across as highly confident.”

Martin was unable to win over a sceptical Rangers support and his relationship with fans soured to the extent that he required a police escort after the 1-1 draw at Falkirk – his final match in charge.

Bannan thinks Rohl would be able to win round the angry Ibrox fanbase.

“He is very passionate,” Bannan said. “He took to Sheffield Wednesday and the fans took to him right away because of the passion he showed.

“I know he is up for a battle – he came to us when we were rock bottom and looked likely to be relegated but we stayed up that year and kicked on.

“A lot of people seem to forget he worked at a massive club in Bayern Munich. I know he was assistant there but he would have got a taste of something similar to the Old Firm teams, because it’s all about winning games.”

The only thing that would convince Rangers fans that Rohl is the right man is winning – and winning regularly.

Martin left Rangers without any points from two Europa League matches and sitting eighth in the Premiership with just eight points from seven games.

Bannan – a self-confessed Celtic fan – has no doubt results would improve with Rohl at the helm.

“Knowing the manager’s character and looking at that Rangers team, there’d be an upturn in results if Danny did get the job,” he said.

‘New Rangers hierarchy under serious pressure after Gerrard rejection’

Would Rohl just be ‘rinse & repeat’?

Bannan’s testimony is glowing, but would Rohl be able to do what Martin could not?

The German is younger, has managed significantly fewer matches, and does not have as much experience of Rangers or Scotland as the man he would succeed.

Would all that undermine his ability to handle the myriad problems the next Rangers boss will face on and off the pitch?

“Danny Rohl is 36 years old – you can be as good a coach as you want, but is he going to have the experience of handling all the fires that need to be put out at Rangers at the moment? I would suggest ‘no’,” said former Scotland midfielder Michael Stewart on Sportsound.

“They need a manager who is a genuine leader, a figurehead, and I’m not sure Danny Rohl would have the experience or wherewithal to handle the mess that Rangers are in at the minute.”

And despite’s Rohl impressive CV as a whole, former Rangers striker Billy Dodds – who was part of last season’s interim coaching team – says the optics of appointing another head coach from the English Championship would not wash with Rangers supporters.

“Most wanted Steven Gerrard, but that’s gone now,” he said on Sportsound.

“I just think if you go down that Championship route again – I am not saying Danny Rohl is not a good manager, I’ve heard he is – but it is kind of rinse and repeat, and I don’t think the Rangers fans want that.

“It’s huge that the hierarchy at Rangers take the fans into account on this.”

Given how turblent their nascent reign has been, how important is it that the new ownership get this decision absolutely right? Crucial, says Stewart.

“Can anybody tell me anything that’s happened since the new ownership has come in that’s been positive?” he asked on Sportsound.

“Russell Martin’s appointment – questionable. [Sporting director] Kevin Thelwell’s appointment – questionable. Recruitment – questionable. Hanging on to Russell Martin longer than they should – questionable. And now this Gerrard debacle.
