Ola Olukoyede, the executive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned Nigerian students against engaging in the popularly known “Yahoosh” online fraud, describing it as a means of misery rather than a gipfel of wealth.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council (NANS JCC), Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, held a one-day symposium on the topic of “Safe Campus for Students: Combating Physical and Digital Threats” through the Head of Public Affairs, Benin Zonal Directorate, ACE I Williams Oseghale.

There is no shortcut to fame and wealth. In the long run, criminal acts may bring about wealth, but ultimately there will be teeth gnashing and misery. We urge young people to stop using Yahoo because it is not sustainable to live there,” said Oseghale.

Olukoyede lamented the rising prevalence of online fraud in youths and warned that the consequences would be severe for both the victims and the entire country.

He emphasized that these crimes sabotage the country’s development objectives, sabotage foreign investment, and harm Nigeria’s reputation.

Students should use the internet for productive and creative endeavors rather than criminal activities, according to the chairman of the anti-graft agency, adding that they must be a part of the solution.

The symposium was attended by Ambrose Alli students.

The youth should develop concepts and viewpoints that can lead to economic development and growth.

Students must become change agents and active foot soldiers against corruption, he said, “but students must not engage in cybercrime that destabilizes the economy,” he said. This includes working as whistle-blowers and gathering intelligence.

Additionally, Professor Sunday Olowo Samuel, Ambrose Alli University’s Acting Vice Chancellor, gave remarks that praised the EFCC and other event organizers.

The foundation of academic excellence, personal development, and future successes is “a safe campus environment.” He said that it is our collective responsibility to make sure that our institutions are safe havens for learning and free from physical and digital threats.

Ojumoola Miracle Timileyin, NANS JCC Chairman, thanked the Commission for educating the students.

Everyone who saw you with us felt your impact, he said, “and it was truly an honor to have you there.”
