India’s Ashwin retires from IPL to focus on T20 cricket overseas

Ravichandran Ashwin, the spinner for the Indian Premier League (IPL), has announced that he will return to play for franchise cricket in other nations.

The 38-year-old also represented Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Kings XI Punjab before beginning and ending his IPL career with his hometown team, Chennai Super Kings.

The 38-year-old posted on X on Wednesday, “They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around different leagues begins.”

He continued, “Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what lies ahead of me.”

Any current international or domestic cricket player in India is not permitted to play in international competitions by the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI).

With 187 wickets in 221 games and a 7.2% economy rate, Ashwin is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL.

The off-spinner, who had taken 537 Test wickets, 156 one-day international wickets, and 72 T20 wickets, left international cricket in December 2024.

In India’s Test innings, only Anil Kumble’s 619 wickets surpassed Ashwin.

In 2011, Ashwin made his Test debut against West Indies, and received the award for the match, with scores of 9-128 overall.

In his 106 Test matches, the Chennai-born bowler recorded eight 10-wicket totals and hit six centuries.

The second of a five-test tour of Australia saw India suffer a 3-1 series defeat. In November of this year, 2022, Ashwin played his final T20 international.
