- Martin Kemp catapulted to stardom as the bassist for the 1980s New Romantic band Spandau Ballet, famed for hits like ‘Gold’ and ‘True’. The band, which also featured singer Tony Hadley and Martin’s brother, Gary Kemp, sold over 25 million albums globally and graced the stage at the now-iconic Live Aid in 1985.
- He later transitioned into acting, starring in films such as 1990’s ‘The Krays’, the American horror flick ‘Embrace of the Vampire’, and the more recent 2020 rom-com ‘The Loss Adjuster’. However, he’s perhaps best known for his portrayal of Steve Owen in the long-standing BBC soap ‘EastEnders’.
- At 64, Martin hasn’t left his musical past behind. He continues to tour the UK with his ‘Back To The 80s’ DJ set, giving nostalgic fans a chance to revel in some of the era’s most popular tunes. With a Christmas special and tour dates scheduled throughout 2026, it seems Martin has no plans to slow down.
- Married to Shirlie Holliman (of Wham! and Pepsi and Shirlie fame) since 1988, Martin is a father to two children, Harley Moon Kemp, born in 1989, and her younger brother Roman Kemp, born in 1993. Roman has also carved out a name for himself in showbiz, presenting ‘The One Show’ and ‘The Finish Line’ on the BBC, as well as featuring in ‘Celebrity Race Across the World’ alongside Harley Moon.
- In his private life, Martin, who’s currently braving the I’m A Celeb jungle, confronted a significant health challenge when an MRI scan in 1997 disclosed he had two brain tumours; one was surgically removed, while the other was treated with radiotherapy. Both he and Shirlie also endure tinnitus, a condition Martin explained on Gaby Roslin’s podcast may have stemmed from his ear being ‘pointed at my amplifiers’.
