Ruby Wax, who is starring in I’m a Celebrity, was left rattled after OJ Simpson pretended to stab her while mimicking a scene from a famous horror movie and told her he killed his late wife
She is currently dealing with the creepy crawlies in the Australian jungle for I’m a Celebrity but comedian and presenter Ruby Wax is already accustomed to coping with her fair share of stomach-churning scenarios.
The 72-year-old hosted her own show, Ruby Wax Meets, for four years back in the nineties. She interviewed some of the biggest and most controversial stars in the entertainment world at the time, including Madonna, Donald Trump and OJ Simpson.
It was during her chats with NFL star Simpson, who died last year at the age of 76, that she endured some unsettling and sick moments in which he pretended to knife her and called her up to say he’d killed his wife.
Ruby, who is also an actress and mental health campaigner with a masters degree in cognitive therapy, reflected on some of her most infamous interviews in the 2021 BBC show When Ruby Wax Met. Admitting she had never watched footage from them, she sat down for the three part series to look back on her own psychology at the time and those of her most iconic interviewees.
One shocking clip which resurfaced after OJ died in April 2024, shows Ruby discussing his bizarre actions that she admitted “genuinely surprised” her. In the 1998 meeting Ruby, who was renowned for her direct style of questioning, outright asked OJ if he had killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman . “Did you do it?” she asked while staring down at him. Looking at Ruby and directly into the camera he smiled and said, “No I didn’t, nope. Did not do it.”
In the BBC’s later programme, Ruby who described OJ as “the most complicated character on earth” is seen watching the film back and commenting on it. “Afterwards I do a piece to camera saying, ‘ I’ve been fixed up and I don’t know who my date is gonna be. ‘ And we put him in the hallway and then I open the door and it would be him”, she remembers.
“But when he was out there, all the trays were out there and he was looking for a knife to fool me when the door was opened. He grabbed a banana, but there was no knife.
Then, in the clip, OJ makes stabbish movements while simultaneously making high pitched sounds, which sound like the scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s horror film Psycho, which is about a shower murder. She continues, “OJ called me up on April 1st, in London, and said “I killed her,” and then went on April 1st.”
Following Simpson’s acquittal of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman’s murder in 1994, the original interview was held. Ruby admitted she thought she could persuade OJ to acknowledge the killings, calling it a “psychological minefield.” I believed I could catch him. I anticipated that he would say, “Yes, he did it,” and that I would put him in jail. She described her own thought processes at the time as “public defender.”
