On a very boozy trip to Nashville, associate editor Tom Bryant witnessed Amber Davies’ dancing abilities up close.
When Amber Davies hits the Strictly dance floor this weekend – armed with barely any rehearsal time – plenty will be wondering whether she’s got what it takes.
A last-minute replacement for injured Dani Dyer, she’ll only have a few hours of training with partner Nikita Kuzmin under her belt.
But if Amber’s stamina on a sticky Nashville dancefloor was anything to go by, her competitors don’t stand a chance. Back in 2018, I remember ending up with her in a slightly grimy bar on the city’s main strip, known as the legendary Honky Tonk Highway.
It may have only been 3pm but it’s fair to say the drinks had been flowing like the Mississippi for hours. A small but determined crew, including myself and Amber, had already been up for 10 hours after an alarmingly early start, interviewing Dolly Parton at her manager’s downtown office.

This was when Amber was only a year out of Love Island but before her incredible transition into becoming a West End star. Funny, modest and down-to-earth, she had lined up a chat ahead of starring in Dolly: 9 to 5, which was all being filmed for a new documentary.
After a tired-looking female singer on stage started singing Jolene, we all had to laugh after leaving the bar afterwards, minus Dolly but with her publicist Steve.
Amber jumped right into action on a deserted dancefloor while holding a drink in hand.
