Asake, a musician, received his first Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance with “Amapiano” at the 67th Grammy Awards, and he finally addressed his bold new appearance and tattoos to his face.
The 30-year-old, known for hit songs like ‘ Joha’, ‘ Lonely At The Top’, ‘ Amapiano’, ‘ Organise’, and ‘ Sungba’, spoke with Billboard on the 67th Grammy Awards red carpet about his transformation and the significance of his nomination. “I love to feel comfortable with myself”, he said, reflecting on his recent changes, including a bold new hairstyle and striking tattoos.
When asked about his new look, Asake shared, “This is how I feel now. I enjoy performing the things I enjoy doing. It is good for me, not even about anybody. Right now, I’m feeling this way. You might not see any tattoos on my face until tomorrow when I wake up.
Asake also revealed that his nighttime outfit was a piece of clothing made by his friend PDF, who assisted him in getting a distinctive military-inspired look. “I’m wearing a custom design from PDF, my good friend, so we designed this together because I’m in my military time”, he explained.
With Asake’s compatriot Tems’ song “Love Me Jeje” earning the top prize, the Best African Music Performance category had a fierce competition. Rema, Femi Kuti, and Burna Boy were the other nominees in the category, along with “Last Dance” and “Calm Down.”
