How do points work in the County Championship?

A team can earn up to 24 points in a single match in the County Championship.

The winning team receives 16 points, but the losers receive none for the outcome. Each team receives eight points in a draw.

Even if the team eventually loses the match, teams can still receive up to eight additional bonus points for their batting and bowling performances in the opening innings of the contest.

A team can start with 250 runs and reach their maximum batting bonus point of 450 or more during the first innings, earning up to five.

Depending on how many wickets are taken, a team can win up to three additional points when it bowls.

Three points are given for each nine or ten wickets that are taken in the first 110 overs, with three points given for each.

Teams have finished ahead of other teams in the County Championship table if the scoring system has prevented them from winning more matches than their rivals have done.

Surrey is second in the Division One standings heading into the round of matches that will begin on Sunday, June 22 despite not capturing any victories over Sussex and Somerset, who are third and fifth, respectively.

It’s similar to the story from Division Two. Despite having one more game to win than third-place Glamorgan, Derbyshire are second.

Despite having won two matches this season, Lancashire are above Kent in the table, with the exception of one of their seven County Championship games still lagging behind.

Over the years, teams have been deducted for a number of crimes.

Unregistered players are fielded, the pitches are bad, and there are slow overrates.

Glamorgan, Somerset, and Yorkshire have each received one point for slow over-rates this season, which means they haven’t bowled the required number of overs during a day’s play.
