In the 1990s, Shannie Twain gained notoriety as a country music icon, becoming one of the best-selling artists ever.
But she wasn’t always playing at Glastonbury, selling out large venues, and getting mobbed by adoring fans. The 59-year-old singer started out as many do – with nothing but a dream.
Shania (born Eilleen Regina Edwards in 1965 in Ontario, Canada) grew up in a financially struggling family. She began performing in bars and clubs as a young child to support her family, developing both her musical and stage presence. She continued singing to support her younger siblings after her parents died in a tragic car accident when she was 22.
A home video of the singer from the early 1990s demonstrates that she wasn’t afraid to rise and showcase her talent. She obviously showed incredible talent at a young age.
One supporter posted “Rare home video footage of Shania Twain playing for friends and family in Ontario at Christmastime in 1991” on Reddit.
She made money performing at the nearby Deerhurst Resort to support herself and her younger siblings (after their mom and stepdad passed away in a car accident in 1987).
The record companies took notice of some of her demo tapes a few years after this was filmed. She would eventually change her stage name to “Shania” and sign with Mercury Nashville Records.
Many people logged into the comments section of Reddit after the post became popular. They cited Shania’s incredible talent, which has persisted for a long time.
One said: “She has such a beautiful unique voice”. Another commented: “Her voice is so beautiful. And this video makes me nostalgic for the 1990s.
A third wrote: “Who is talking so much in the background? Don’t they know they’re at a free Shania Twain concert”?! And a fourth added: “I just watched here in Vegas on the 29th. She’s still amazing”.
