Actress Diane Ladd’s cause of death has been shared after her famous daughter, Laura Dern, confirmed her death with a heartfelt statement at the beginning of the month
Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd’s death has been revealed, just weeks after she passed away at the age of 89 at her California home on November 3. Weeks after her death, it has now been confirmed that she lost her life due to acute on chronic hypoxic respiratory failure, which occurs when there isn’t enough oxygen in the blood.
Her famous daughter, Laura Dern, confirmed her death with a heartfelt statement: “My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Calif. She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
According to the death certificate, Diane had also had interstatial lung disease for several years, while oesophageal dysmotility was listed as another significant contributing condition to her death. The document obtained by People magazine confirmed that she was cremated on 10 November.

Described as being a ‘”true member of a true show business dynasty”, Diane was a cousin of American playwright and screenwriter Tennessee Williams and a relative of musician and poet Sidney Lanier. She was married to fellow actor Bruce Dern, who is their daughter Laura’s father.
Bruce, who was married to Diane between 1960 and 1969, also shared a touching statement: “Diane was a tremendous actress and I feel like, a bit of a ‘hidden treasure’ until she ran into David Lynch. When he cast her as Laura‘s mom in Wild at Heart it felt like the world then really understood her brilliance. She was a great value as a decades-long board member of SAG, giving a real actress’ point of view.”
He added: “She lived a good life. She saw everything the way it was. She was a great teammate to her fellow actors. She was funny, clever, gracious. But most importantly to me, she was a wonderful mother to our incredible wunderkind daughter. And for that I will be forever grateful to her.”
Diane rose to fame in her late 30s when she landed the role of Flo in the Martin Scorsese in the 1974 rom com film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. It was a part that would earn her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Two more Oscar nominations followed for her roles in the David Lynch directed black comedy Wild at Heart, in which she starred alongside her daughter Laura and Nicholas Cage.
She earned a third nomination for the 1991 Great Depression drama Rambling Rose, again alongside daughter Laura.
As well as her award nominated movies, Diane has also appeared on Broadway where she made her acting debut in 1968. Prior to that she was a Copa Girl at the famed Copacabana nightclub when she was a struggling actress in New York, as well as singing in a French quartet jazz band as a student.
Other big roles include the films Chinatown and the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
