Hewett and Reid into sixth-straight French Open final

For the sixth consecutive year, British duo Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett reached the French Open men’s wheelchair doubles final.

In Roland Garros, which is increasingly wet, the top seeds defeated Takuya Miki of Japan and Casey Ratzlaff of the USA 6-2, 6-3.

On their second match point, Reid scored an ace to seal their victory in Paris.

In the final, they will face either Stephane Houdet of Japan and France or Daniel Caverzaschi and Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina.

The last five titles won at Roland Garros were won by Scotland’s Reid and England’s Hewett.

The second set, in spite of the circumstances, was much simpler for the perennial champions, which saw six breaks of serve, four of which were caused by the British team.

Reid and Hewett started their match as rivals in the singles quarter-finals, and it ended a slightly odd day.

Hewett, the second seed, triumphed 6-2 6-4. In the semi-finals of the singles, he will face fourth-seeded Fernandez.

On Thursday, Britain’s Andy Lapthorne was eliminated from both men’s quad wheelchair competitions.

Top seed Niels Vink of the Netherlands lost to him in the semi-final of the Englishman’s day by 6-4, 6-4.

He then lost 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 to Dutch partner Sam Schroder in the doubles match, where he was also knocked out in the match tie-break by Ahmet Kaplan of Turkey and Donald Ramphadi of South Africa.
