Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford describes Jordan Henderson’s recall as a “great move” and the 34-year-old “brings a winning mentality to the squad.”
For the first time since November 2023, Ajax midfielder Henderson was chosen for his first England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia under the leadership of Thomas Tuchel.
Under Fabio Capello’s leadership, Henderson won his first of his 81 caps in 2010, and Tuchel has praised the former Liverpool skipper as “embodies everything we try to build.”
Pickford and Henderson are well-known because they both played for Sunderland at the beginning of their careers and were a part of the England sides that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the Qatar 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.
And Pickford believes that Henderson and Newcastle defender Dan Burn’s addition will aid the squad in its bid to win the World Cup in 2026.
“We’ve been knocking on the door for some time,” the employee said. The goalkeeper stated that they have reached the semi-final and quarterfinal twice.
“It’s time to move on to the next step,” she said. We are aware of the steps involved. The manager has come in to do that, Pickford said, and it’s about what it takes to win the trophy.
“Dan Burn’s first call-up came from us, which is a great accomplishment for him,” he said. With how many caps does Hendo have, we have him. He has a winning mindset, both as a player and as a captain, that he has at Liverpool.
The more leaders you have in the team, in my opinion, the more success they will bring.
They will “drive” the training standards, the standards in the neighborhood, and improve the experience for everyone there.
After a brief stint at Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League for less than six months, Henderson made his Ajax debut in January 2024.
This season, he has made 38 appearances for Ajax, who are six points clear of the Eredivisie.
Pickford said, “His desire to win and what he has won and accomplished is driven by himself.”
He is a successful and effective leader. Hendo’s return to the team is great, in my opinion.
He served as vice-captain for a number of years. He was vice-captain in 2018 to Harry Kane but he didn’t attend the final Euros.
“I think Hendo is fantastic, I think.” The teams that have won have always had that experience on the side because they have leaders in your group.
“I think having someone like him in the squad is a great decision,” he said. Regardless of whether he plays or not, Pickford said, “He has done something, he is still driven,” and he will lead the training pitch, he continued.
Under previous manager Gareth Southgate, England lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, and Pickford says it’s unclear if Henderson could have contributed to England’s first men’s trophy since 1966.
Pickford remarked, “We reached a final and didn’t win it.
Jords is a great athlete who is well-liked by both the staff and the players.
