Following a change in a rule made by football’s lawmakers IFAB, who hold on for longer than eight seconds will be punished by forfeiting a corner from the following season.
If they hold on for more than six seconds, they are currently expected to receive an indirect free kick.
However, it is rarely retaliated for.
This season, keepers have been able to hold on for eight seconds in a number of competitions, with the referee handing down the final five seconds.

The amendment requires that a goalkeeper who holds the ball for longer than eight seconds (with the referee using a visual five-second countdown) to receive a corner kick from the opposing team, as stated in a statement released following their annual meeting in Belfast.
IFAB also backed FIFA’s suggestion that referees should wear cameras during the live broadcast of the World Cup in the upcoming year.
