Gareth Ainsworth, the club’s manager, will have heart surgery and be out “for a few weeks.”

While Ainsworth, 52, recovers from the “routine” operation, Richard Dobson, a long-term assistant, will take over.

A routine League Managers’ Association (LMA) health check, according to Ainsworth, helped identify the issue after the end of the previous season.

He was in charge of the Gills’ 1-0 home defeat against Harrogate Town on Saturday, which put them on the verge of season one after being overtaken by Swindon Town and Walsall.

Ainsworth, who previously oversaw Wycombe, QPR, and Shrewsbury, stated: “I went for the LMA health check and they discovered something with my heart.

This week, I need heart surgery. Although it sounds dramatic, it is actually a routine action.

“All of this has been planned,” the statement read. Do not let that discourage Dobbo and the entire team; they will be leading. I’ll be away for a few weeks before returning.

We’ve been informed about Gareth’s upcoming surgery for many weeks, according to chairman Brad Galinson.
