Gene Hackman’s reclusive life away from spotlight before tragic death alongside wife

Gene Hackman, the two-time Oscar-winning actor, was one of the best talents to ever grace the silver screen, known for his powerful performances in iconic films like The French Connection and Unforgiven. Gene passed away on February 27, 2025, at the age of 95.
After a career spanning more than four decades, Gene made the conscious decision to step away from the spotlight, opting for a quieter, more solitary life. Born in 1930, Gene rose to fame in the 1970s, becoming a household name for his roles in films like The Conversation, Superman, and Hoosiers. His films The French Connection and Unforgiven won him critical acclaim and two Academy Awards. Gene began restraining from the public eye in the early 2000s after his most recent acting role in Welcome to Mooseport (2004) despite his enormous success and recognition.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, Gene has spent the last two years living a covert life, far from the Hollywood parties and flashing cameras that once defined his career. Given his acting prowess and the popularity of his roles, he made the unanticipated decision to leave the movie. Gene, however, has made it clear that he preferred the tranquility and privacy that his new life offered over the pressures of fame.
“I was trained to be an actor, not a star. He once said, “I was trained to play roles, not to deal with fame, agents, lawyers, and the press.” “Watching myself on screen really costs me a lot of money emotionally. I consider myself to be quite young when I look at this old man with his sagging chin, tired eyes, receding hairline, and all that.
In recent years, Gene has been seen only occasionally. He last spotted in public while enjoying an apple pie and coffee at a 7-Eleven in New Mexico, which was a rare sight. For the first time in over 20 years, he and his wife Betsy Arakawa were seen in public just days after making this appearance. The couple, married since 1991, rarely make public appearances, adding to Hackman’s desire for privacy.
Gene was spotted near his Santa Fe home in excellent health and high spirits in 2023, after years away from the public eye. He appeared to be fit and active, enthusiastically tackling yard work, shovel in hand, as he immersed himself in his outdoor chores.

After visiting a Wendy’s drive-thru, he was also seen enjoying a bite to eat in his car, before heading to the gas station to fill up his car and get some instant coffee. He wore a fleece sweater over a long, grey shirt, which he wore for exercise. He paired the outfit with khaki baseball caps, black trainers, and blue jeans. The actor casually placed his sunglasses on top of his hat to protect him from the sun and make sure he had them on ready.
While still sporting his customary styled moustache, his wispy grey hairs could be seen coming out of the back of his cap and tucked behind his ears. In the 2004 comedy Welcome to Mooseport, Gene last appeared in front of the camera alongside Christine Baranski and Ray Romano. After filming, he announced his departure from the industry, marking the end of his acting career.
